Assin North District is one of the districts in the Central Region of Ghana that has a lot of political eyes watching it.
Politically, Assin North District is located in the Assin North constituency and the member of parliament is Honorable James Gyekye Quayson on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Assin North and Assin Central Constituency were together until the then Prof. John Evans Atta Mills led administration seperated the two in 2012.
The district continued to work under Assin Central District (Assin Fosu) from 2013 to 2018 before the New Patriotic Party under the leadership of the former member of Parliament for Assin North Constituency, Hon. Abena Durowaa Mensah lobbied for Assin North to have it own district and was inaugurated on 15th March, 2018.
The District Chief Executive who is the representative of the president is always appointed by the president, and since it was a new district, the first person lucky to hold that position was Hon. Charles Ohene Andoh.
In the appointment of DCEs, a lot of consultation is done with the council of state but what I can not affirm is whether consultations are done with the grassroot supporters of the party before the DCE is appointed.
This lack of effective consultation with the grassroot supporters normally truncate the joyous momentum the grassroot supporters always carry with the party.
I am not suggesting that the previous appointments made by the New Patriotic Party government was bad. The difficulty with some appointments however is the total neglect for the grassroot supporters by some of these appointees.
In the case of who becomes the next DCE for Assin North District is possibly a burden to every single person who has the development of Assin North at heart.
During NPP’s primaries in 2020, the current DCE, Hon. Charles Ohene Andoh was accused of giving his support to the former MP, Hon. Abena Durowaah Mensah. Accusations and counter accusations were sometimes traded by the DCE and some party leadership which divided the NPP supporters.
Some party leadership who are supposed to lobby openly for him to retain his seat are not doing that and may not do that if they strongly believe that the former MP lost his seat through the division Mr. Charles Ohene Andoh brought into the party.
Although he did not have enough time to work for his party and the people within the district, many will measure his contributions to the development of the District with the two years he had in office as DCE, especially the district capital – Assin Bereku.
Among the five shortlisted DCE,s for Assin North, the NPP will appoint a true party person who has stayed in the district for more than 10 years and has worked with the Assembly. Such a person if appointed will be in the best position to address the numerous challenges facing the district.
Again, since the New Patriotic Party want to come back and take the Assin North parliamentary seat in 2024, the party leadership will definitely elect someone who will appeal to the political divide in the district and understand the “language” of the people.
Also, they will choose someone whose door will always be opened to the youths of the party and will be a link between the grassroot supporters and office of the president.
They will consider a person who will be able to bring the grassroot supporters and the party leadership in the district together. Peaceful person who will always work to maintain the peaceful environment the district is enjoying.
Most importantly, a party that lost the parliamentary seat by almost 3,000 votes will appoint a competent District Chief Executive (DCE) who will continue every single project started by the former MP, Hon. Abena Durowaah Mensah, hence campaigning for the next Parliamentary Candidate for the party in 2024.
I am sure and strongly believe that if the above suggestions are to be considered in the appointment of the next Assin North DCE, the various communities within the constituency will get benefits and they will forever praise the leadership of the NPP and the party will make difference come 2024 election as far as the Assin North Parliamentary seat is concerned.
