Just In: First Lady Finally Rejects Presidential Spouses Allowance
First Lady of the Republic of Ghana, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo rejects Presidential Spouses Allowance, set to refund all monies paid to her as allowances from 2017.
The payment of allowances for the first and second ladies as recommended by the Ntiamoa-Baidu Committee has been the issue most Ghanaians have talked about and blaming the government for taking that initiative.
According to some Ghanaians, at no point under the past president were 1st and 2nd ladies paid salaries. Rather, 1st and 2nd ladies, as well as former 1st and 2nd ladies were paid allowances every quarter.
These allowances were paid every quarter by the Chief of Staff from the financial allocation of the Office of the President and not the Ministry of Finance, and that the document being circulated by the New Patriotic Party social media activists is fake.
Some also said that the decision by President Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia to pay their spouses a monthly salary equivalent to the salary of a Cabinet Minister, including allowances and other benefits, which they intend to back-date to January 2017, is unconstitutional and unprecedented in the history of Ghana.
“Given this, Mrs. Rebecca Akufo-Addo in consultation with the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo has decided to refund all monies paid to her as allowances from the date of the President’s assumption of office, that is from January 2017 to date, amounting to GH¢899,097.84.
The First Lady has also decided not to accept any monies that have been allocated to be paid to her under the recommendations of the Ntiamoa-Baidu Committee, as approved by Parliament.”
